Objective:
Adolescent diet, physical activity and nutritional status are generally known to be sub-optimal. This is an introduction to a special issue of papers devoted to exploring factors affecting diet and physical activity in adolescents, including food insecure and vulnerable groups.
SettingEight settings including urban, peri-urban and rural across sites from five different low- and middle-income countries.
Design:Focus groups with adolescents and caregivers carried out by trained researchers.
Results:Our results show that adolescents, even in poor settings, know about healthy diet and lifestyles. They want to have energy, feel happy, look good and live longer, but their desire for autonomy, a need to ‘belong’ in their peer group, plus vulnerability to marketing exploiting their aspirations, leads them to make unhealthy choices. They describe significant gender, culture and context-specific barriers. For example, urban adolescents had easy access to energy dense, unhealthy foods bought outside the home, whereas junk foods were only beginning to permeate rural sites. Among adolescents in Indian sites, pressure to excel in exams meant that academic studies were squeezing out physical activity time.
Conclusions:Interventions to improve adolescents’ diets and physical activity levels must therefore address structural and environmental issues and influences in their homes and schools, since it is clear that their food and activity choices are the product of an interacting complex of factors. In the next phase of work, the Transforming Adolescent Lives through Nutrition consortium will employ groups of adolescents, caregivers and local stakeholders in each site to develop interventions to improve adolescent nutritional status.

Transport mechanisms in structurally ordered piezoelectric Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 (CTGS) single crystals are studied in the temperature range of 1000-1300 °C by application of the isotope 18O as a tracer and subsequent analysis of diffusion profiles of this isotope using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Determined oxygen self-diffusion coefficients enable calculation of oxygen ion contribution to the total conductivity, which is shown to be small. Since very low contributions of the cations have to be expected, the total conductivity must be dominated by electron transport. Ion and electron conductivities are governed by different mechanisms with activation energies (1.9±0.1) eV and (1.2±0.07) eV, respectively. Further, the electromechanical losses are studied as a function of temperature by means of impedance spectroscopy on samples with electrodes and a contactless tone-burst excitation technique. At temperatures above 650 °C the conductivity-related losses are dominant. Finally, the operation of CTGS resonators is demonstrated at cryogenic temperatures and materials piezoelectric strain constants are determined from 4.2 K to room temperature.

This special issue of the European journal of applied mathematics features research articles that involve the application of mathematical methodologies to the modelling of a broad range of problems related to crime and security. Some specific topics in this issue include recent developments in mathematical models of residential burglary, a dynamical model for the spatial spread of riots initiated by some triggering event, the analysis and development of game-theoretic models of crime and conflict, the study of statistically based models of insurgent activity and terrorism using real-world data sets, models for the optimal strategy of police deployment under realistic constraints, and a model of cyber crime as related to the study of spiking behaviour in social network cyberspace communications. Overall, the mathematical and computational methodologies employed in these studies are as diverse as the specific applications themselves and the scales (spatial or otherwise) to which they are applied. These methodologies range from statistical and stochastic methods based on maximum likelihood methods, Bayesian equilibria, regression analysis, self-excited Hawkes point processes, agent-based random walk models on networks, to more traditional applied mathematical methods such as dynamical systems and stability theory, the theory of Nash equilibria, rigorous methods in partial differential equations and travelling wave theory, and asymptotic methods that exploit disparate space and time scales.

Operation of single crystalline Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 (CTGS) and La3Ga5SiO14 (LGS) bulk acoustic wave resonators is demonstrated up to 1270 °C and 1470 °C, respectively. The mass sensitivity of such devices is about 35 cm2 Hz/μg at 800 °C. Therefore, they are sensitive transducers suited to monitoring, for example, mass deposition processes at high temperatures. The electromechanical loss in CTGS is found to be significantly lower than that in LGS. Platinum coated CTGS samples show a remarkable long-term stability at 1000 °C in air. After an initial period of 300 h, the conductivity is found to remain nearly constant for at least 2400 h. Measurements of resonance frequency of CTGS for 1000 h show a qualitatively similar sequence, with an initial systematic increase followed by nearly constant values. In contrast, measurements on platinum-coated LGS plates show a conductivity decreasing by 15 % over a period of 5000 h.

CTGS (Ca3TaGa3Si2O14) is a commercially available, Czochralski-grown piezoelectric material from the langasite family that has an ordered crystal structure. It can be excited piezoelectrically up to at least 1285 °C, which is very close to the melting temperature of 1350 °C. In order to determine the loss at elevated temperatures, two different resonance techniques are used. A contactless transduction method is employed up to about 600 °C, whereas transduction involving standard keyhole-shaped film electrodes is employed up to 1285 °C. Comparison of the temperature-dependent inverse Q factor shows that contactless measurements are best suited for the lower temperature range, where sample clamping and losses caused by the electrodes contribute significantly to the total loss. However, at higher temperatures, measurement of the electrical impedance of samples with film electrodes in the vicinity of the resonance frequency proves to be suitable. Even at 1100 °C, 5 MHz CTGS resonators are found to have a Q factor of about 1200, which is great enough to enable numerous bulk-acoustic-wave applications. Further, a nearly linear temperature dependence of the resonance frequency with a temperature coefficient of 210 Hz/K makes Y-cut CTGS well suited for temperature-sensing applications.

The advancement of imprint lithography as a method for fabricating nanostructures is impeded by a lack of effective tools for characterizing mechanical properties and geometry at the nanoscale. In this report, we describe the development of methods for determining elastic moduli and cross sectional dimensions of imprinted nanolines from Brillouin light scattering (BLS) measurements using finite-element (FE) and Farnell-Adler models for the vibrational modes. An array of parallel nanoimprinted lines of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with widths of ∼65 nm and heights of ∼140 nm served as a model specimen. Several acoustic modes were observed with BLS in the low-gigahertz frequency range, and the forms of the vibrational displacements were identified through correlation with calculations using measured bulk-PMMA moduli and density as input. The acoustic modes include several flexural, Rayleigh-like, and Sezawa-like modes. Fitting of Farnell-Adler calculations to the measured dispersion curves was explored as a means of extracting elastic moduli and nanoline dimensions from the data. Some values obtained from this inversion analysis were unrealistic, which suggests that geometric approximations in the model introduce significant systematic errors. In forward calculations, the frequencies determined with the FE method are found to more closely match measured frequencies. This suggests that the FE approach may be more accurate for inversion analysis. Initial estimates of uncertainties in the FE calculations support this conclusion.
